Bayqsan® Polyurethane Dispersions and Polyurea Powder for skin and sun Care
For skin and sun care formulations, Bayer MaterialScience offers two novel solutions: film-forming polyurethane dispersions and a non film-forming polyurea powder as a sensory additive.

New test results confirm the varied benefits of Bayqsan® C 1000, which contains neither co-solvents nor preservatives. It has been confirmed, for example, that Bayqsan® C 1000 not only shows an SPF-boosting effect in formulations that include the UVB filters octocrylene and ethylhexyl triazone, but significantly increases the SPF of formulations based on broadband UV filters such as bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) and benzophenone-3.
Bayqsan® C 1000 polyurethane dispersion also acts as a stabilizing ingredient for oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Scientists at Bayer MaterialScience took advantage of this property to develop a sunscreen spray with a very low concentration of emulsifier. This low-viscosity formulation exhibits high water resistance, as confirmed by in-vivo tests conducted in accordance with guidelines established by Colipa, the European Cosmetics Association.
There are also new results regarding the film-forming properties of Bayqsan® C 1000. A film of the polyurethane dispersion on artificial skin withstood mechanical stress with virtually no visible damage, unlike the acrylate copolymer film it was compared to. Films based on Bayqsan® C 1000 polyurethane dispersion are very flexible, move with the skin and allow it to breathe, making sunscreens formulated with this dispersion very comfortable to wear.

The non film-forming polyurea powder Bayqsan® C 1005 is suitable for dry or liquid products, high- and low-viscosity products such as lotions, creams and sprays. This polyurea powder imparts smoothness during the application process and leaves a powdery velvety, non-greasy, non-tacky feeling on the skin.
Applications are e.g.: Skin care, Body care, Face masks and Sunscreen products.
Bayqsan® polyurethane dispersions work as a film former in face masks and show the following properties :
- A highly elastic film
- Tear resistant, peels off in one piece
The non film-forming polyurea powder Bayqsan® C 1005 is suitable for dry or liquid products, high- and low-viscosity products such as lotions, creams and sprays. This polyurea powder imparts smoothness during the application process and leaves a powdery velvety, non-greasy, non-tacky feeling on the skin.
Applications: face care, body care, face masks, ect.
Bayer MaterialSciene has also developed sun-cream formulations with Bayqsan® C 1000 that not only offer excellent water resistance, but also a pleasant skin feel even at a high sun protection factor (>SPF 25). The challenge was to combine the very good non-sticky and non-greasy properties of the Bayqsan® film formers with the high concentrations of organic and inorganic UV filters.
